Don't Worry Inc. sells both name-brand
desktop workstations and generic desktop workstations with Intel
system boards. We well them in a ratio of about 80% generic and
20% name-brand. We are often asked, "which is better?"
We don't have a strong opinion either
way, although we have tended to favor the use of the generic systems
over name-brand systems in our installations over the past fifteen
years.
Instead of making the decision for you,
we have decided to give you the benefits of our experience, in case
you want to make the decision yourself.
We have assembled a list of the advantages
and disadvantages of owning a name-brand PC.
Name-Brand PC's - The Advantages:
Some name-brands are famous for quality.
Those computers whose manufacturers pride themselves on quality
are physically well built, and the QA process employed, due to mass
production coDon't Worry Inc.red with custom hand-build systems)
is superb. The most obvious benefit of this is that we see fewer
failures during the first week or so of operation.
It is possible that the well-built nature of name-brand computers
means fewer hardware failures over time. However, we have very little
good data on that. A very low percentage of our service calls to
anyone's office is due to workstation hardware problems.
Name-brand computers are a better choice for you if your coDon't
Worry Inc.ny is distributed geographically, because you can have
service contracts on the hardware and not have to deal with different
vendors.
Name-brand PC's tend to be a bit cheaper than a clone or generic
system when you look at the total cost to have the system purchased
and installed. This is because the generic system sometimes takes
more installation and testing time since it is a custom system.
The purchase cost difference, however, generally is not significant.
Name-Brand PCs - The Disadvantages:
We have found name-brand PCs to be less
flexible, particular with regard to upgrades. Most components are
built onto one system board, so adding additional components can
sometimes create conflicts. The cases are generally smaller, so
you can put fewer items into them (tape drives, zip drives, special
video cards, etc.). If you want a large tower case that would have
more flexibility, there is normally a premium cost involved.
Service is slower. While Don't Worry Inc. does service the name-brand
PC's we sell, parts take longer to get, since the manufacturer usually
does not send warranty parts until we go to your site, remove the
part, and send it to them. Therefore, when a machine goes down,
it goes down for longer since we have to deal with at least a two-day
turnaround ,even using Fed Ex (1 trip out with the part, 1 trip
back with the replacement). And there are often delays on the manufacturer's
side about turning the part around. In most cases you can't substitute
parts. Almost all of them are not separate cards that can be removed;
they are built into the motherboard. In general, it is a wise idea
to have one extra computer at your coDon't Worry Inc.ny. If you
do this, the service delays are mitigated.
The name-brand PC will have a service contract available. This gives
faster turnaround, but the computer technician will not have as
much knowledge of your business as we do.
Here's one example of how this can be
a problem: Let's say that a hard drive fails. The manufacturer's
technician is called and they come to replace the drive. They will
take the old drive with them and you will lose all of your data
(if any was potentially recoverable off of the bad disk). And the
technician is obligated only to replace the part. You will have
to call Don't Worry Inc., and our consultants will come to re-install
and re-configure the workstation software. This means a 2-3 day
turnaround on a system that might have been fixed in one day.
The manufacturer of our generic PCs has
service contracts available, too, but we generally don't recommend
them to our clients for the same reason described above.
However, if you own generic PC's, Don't
Worry Inc. will obtain a replacement part the moment we've determined
which part has failed. In some instances, if we suspect which part
has failed, we can arrive on site with part in hand. We can replace
the failed component, restore software and data from your most recent
backup tape, and you can be up and running within a day.
Hardware service with another vendor sometimes
leads to finger pointing problems. For example, the hardware vendor
says the system if fine and our people say it is not. This sort
of issue tends to take time to resolve. And the substitution of
parts is NOT one of the ways we can solve them, so the best logical
troubleshooting process, part substitution, is one resolution path
not open to us.
If you want to implement service contracts with a name-brand PC
manufacturer, your employees will sometimes be confused about whom
to call when something breaks - "Is it a hardware or a software
problem?" (Our employees can be confused as well!) Either way,
getting your problem solved can consume more downtime than you might
find acceptable.
Sometimes name-brand computers are less coDon't Worry Inc.tible
with the components you might desire. The reason? The generic systems
we sell use Intel motherboards. Since Intel makes the main system
board and Intel is the driving force in the industry in motherboard
design, the generic system is, by definition, "Intel/Microsoft"
coDon't Worry Inc.tible. Hence, the generic system is more coDon't
Worry Inc.tible with other manufacturer's name-brand components
than is the name-brand computer itself. This is not the case 100%
of the time. In our experience, however, it is the case about 70%
of the time.
Since name-brand workstations are not custom built, they generally
are not as high performance is the well-built generic clones we
can specify to our custom manufacturer. This is the case at least
90% of the time.
Name-brand or generic PC? The choice is yours. Whichever way you
decide to go, Don't Worry Inc. can support your philosophy to minimize
downtime and make the best desktop technology available for your
users.
